Over the latter years of the florida lottery art unions, the Protestant anti-lottery voice had been relatively mute. Among the grants in July 1962 was one of £20,000 to the Freedom from Hunger campaign, the first lottery money to be designated for overseas use. There was an unfortunate presumption of ambivalence within the Methodist reaction. The president of their conference, Rev. E. C. Leadley, had no hesitation in stating that his church would refuse a grant under any circumstances. When you have seen all the starving millions in Asia you would use anything to beat the hunger.'' The Mammoths

The Golden Kiwi began with a hiss and a roar, but by the end of 1964 it was down to a whimper. In the interim, overseas lotteries had lottery recaptured some lost ground, particularly the series of £100,000 Sydney Opera House lotteries which sold many tickets in New Zealand. By then Gatz had lost his seat, but he had sufficient numbers of colleagues in Parliament who were worried about the fading Kiwi; they kept up the pressure for a new operation that would be genuinely competitive with its overseas rivals. In June 1964 Holyoake and most of his Cabinet colleagues were persuaded. They agreed to four new £135,000 lotteries which would be run consecutively throughout the year alongside the existing Kiwi. The first prize of £60,000 rivaled anything across the Tasman and, for the very first time, the odds on winning a prize were actually better-one in 87, compared with one in 110 for Tatters alls.
